The Christmas break provided the perfect time to reflect on the first four months of Veritons. A couple of these thoughts listed below:
Know when to bring in the experts
I am really keen to have at least a basic knowledge in everything Veritons related. One such thing was our website which I am proud to say that after a fair number of Google searches I was able to get it pretty much to where it is today. I say pretty much as on speaking with a digital marketing firm they mentioned some technical aspects that could be improved so Google would rank the site more favourably. I won’t lie, looking at that list was like trying to read another language! It was at this point that I asked them if they could put me in touch with a developer which they kindly did. Two days later and a raft of improvements covering both the list plus some others they noticed during their work were implemented.
This got me thinking as to how people potentially view accountancy services and it’s probably the same on a lot of occasions. That people will undertake some and search on others before deciding whether to take on themselves or speak with an accountant or tax advisor. I would always urge caution when placing reliance on an answer found online as it only takes that article to be slightly out of date, or the circumstances to not be quite the same and suddenly the advice would be completely different. That’s why at Veritons we don’t place time limits on our initial meetings or record and bill our time every time we speak with a client – we want our clients to keep in contact with us and be that sounding board to them to give the right advice at the right time.
Don’t re-invent the wheel, make it better
One of my favourite shows has returned to our screens this month, Dragons Den. There are those on the show where you can’t quite see either the market for the product or the problem it is trying to solve. With those I think sometimes you see potentially great entrepreneurs that they have fallen into a trap. The trap being the feeling that to launch a business it has to either produce something never seen before or to provide new services in a way they have never been sold before. Not everyone can be the next James Dyson, and I think sometimes these businesses would have stood more chance if rather than look to do something never seen before, they look to just do something better. We can all think of times when we have bought a product or service that didn’t live up to our expectations, and quite often we will comment to our friends and family about how it could be improved. It’s those thoughts which could provide the next entrepreneurial journey. I did the very same. I was a partner at a top 10 accounting practice and kept thinking of ways in which the service could be made better but in larger practices change is often harder to implement – and so here we are, Veritons. We are accountants and tax advisors based in Medway, Kent, with a truly client first focus based on over 20 years experience in advising small businesses. For more background see here.
